STIR Magazine // London School of Financial Arts

I was asked to illustrate an article for STIR Magazine envisaging what the new London School of Financial Arts hackspace might be like. The term hacker in this context being someone who looks at an existing system, dissects it and looks at it in a new way.

I wanted to created a cosy environment with all the information and technology a young, innovative financial hacker might need to hand.

You can find it in the Autumn issue of the magazine, out on October 8th and available for pre order here.

Ain't no party like an ice cream party!

How in the **** has it been nearly 4 months since i posted anything here. Where has the time gone? I mean obviously I've done a bunch of things in that time I just seem to have failed to document that. This is going to change.

So here is a little present to you to say sorry for my absence. Take this, make it your desktop and rejoice in the glorious melty joy of it all.

DISCLAIMER: THIS IS NOT AN ICE CREAM ORGY, THEY JUST LIKE EACH OTHER A LOT

Drunken Butterflies // Animation

Earlier this year the illustrious Garry Sykes released his first feature film. It's called Drunken Butterflies and is about a group of young girls in Newcastle and the trials and tribulations of everyday life. The imdb sums it up better than I:

Newcastle Upon Tyne, the Twenty-Teens. A romantic, violent, life-changing day in the life of eight teenagers.

It's a brilliant film funny, charming & rather upsetting. If you get a chance to see it I highly recommend it. My contribution to the film was a small piece of animation, a little 'trick' you might say. As a result of this I now have an imdb credit. Oh yeah, I am an animation department, dontchaknow!

TTIP & TTP // New Internationalist // May 2014 Issue

This months print issue of New Internationalist Magazine features another double page illustrated by yours truly, you can buy a copy here or read the article online

I was completely unaware this trade agreement was happening until I was commissioned to produce this illustration, if you are interested you can find more info about TTIP here.

Or if - like me – you like things to be explained in comic form ... http://economixcomix.com/home/tpp/

Also what the Green Party have to say on the matter and why you should clearly be voting for them on Thursday!

"... it would blow apart the power of our democratic decision making. The deal provides corporations with new rights to sue the Government for legislating in the public interest – that’s definitely not acting for the common good. "

Synesthesia Magazine Illustration // The Radiator has a Tummy Ache

I produced this illustration for the February 2014 edition of Synesthesia Magazine the theme of which was Nonsense. It is based on a nonsense poem which you can read below...

The Radiator Has a Tummy Ache by Carlotta Eden

I once prescribed tablets
to the old microwave, and
consoled the lemon squeezer,
I hadn't used in a decade.

I remember hearing the kettle
having an asthma attack, and
running to save it by pulling
its plug out, and that

was that. I suggested the radio
stick to one station, tried to fix
the funny noise
the radiator was making.

Now the nurse lends me a smile,
makes me warm in my bed
I shut my eyes tight,
see me pulling a blanket

over the hole in the shed.

New Internationalist Magazine // Detention Centre Map DPS // Issue Jan/Feb 2014

I was commissioned before Christmas to produce a map for double page spread that would be a satirical round up of the worlds detention centres, much like a website or guide book review giving them minus scores.

I took a antique map approach to this, the implication here being, migrants as explorers searching for a new/better world, with the sea monsters of the old maps replaced with metallic leviathans made of aspects of detention centres – these being the hazards they may encounter en-route.

This is a very interesting & terrifying issue and I highly recommend grabbing a copy of the magazine if you get the chance.

Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad // House of Illustration & Folio Society Competition 2014

Cover & spine design

1. 2.
3.

1. Black shapes crouched, lay, sat between the trees leaning against the trunks, clinging to the earth, half coming out, half effaced within the dim light, in all the attitudes of pain, abandonment, and despair.

2. I had to beat that shadow – this wandering and tormented thing. “You will be lost,” I said – “utterly lost.”

3. It was more than a year since his death , more than a year since the news came; she seemed as though she would remember and mourn forever.
