The Transmitter Magazine Illustrations // Just Desserts by Justine Crow // A Christmas Ghost Story

Just up the road from me is Crystal Palace, former site of the rather stunning building of the same name – which perhaps someday soon shall rise again. It is also home to the a massive radio transmitter from which the local magazine The Transmitter derives it's name - also the reason several of my friends refer to it as Crystal Paris, the transmitter is somewhat reminiscent of a certain tower, in a certain French city.

The Transmitter is a lovely little free local magazine exploring the many wonderous facets of South London and featuring reviews, short stories, comics and more. For their Winter Issue I was asked to illustrate a short story by local writer Justine Crow called Just Desserts, the black comedic tale of a food critic who pays the price for his sharp tongue. You can read the story with my illustrations in tow here (pg 26) or if you happen to be in Crystal Palace in the next few weeks they are available in many of the local independent shops for FREE but I recommend popping into Bookseller Crow as they will have lots in stock and it's a particularly nice place to hang out and peruse/buy books.

Pet Portrait // Lily & Pippa (the doglets)

This is a painting I did for my mum a few months back for her birthday. Lily & Pippa are miniature Daschunds, they are ace little dogs, I think I captured them rather well (hopefully my mum agrees!). This was a rather fun piece to work on, if anyone fancies a drawing/painting of their pet gissa shout.

London College of Fashion Show Illustration for Amelia's Magazine

This illustration is for an article in Amelia's Magazine about the 2013 graduates from the London College of Fashion. You can see the dress created by Sarah Buchanan that it is based on below.

It made me think back to the Book of the Dead exhibition at the British Museum that I saw a couple of years ago and of Ancient Eygptian Gods such as Rah the falcon headed sun God but also Stargate and sci-fi, so .... Ancient Egyptian Gods in space, pretty logical yeah? Obviously I wanted my central character to be female and this led me on a path of research towards the Goddess Bestet

Cat Gods FTW!

Mars Attacks for Not For Rental Project

Here it is, incase you didn't get it the film was Mars Attacks the much maligned Tim Burton 90's classic. I personally think a movie that can have Jack Nicholson playing two characters simultaneously and somehow make me not hate Pierce Brosnan is doing pretty well. Akk!! AAKKKKKK!!!! AKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!

Branching out in evil // Aorta Burst Film Club zine

I was approached by Aorta Burst – who hold a monthly film night at Roxy Bar & Art – to contribute to their zine. This month the theme is Indonesian Horror and this guy is my interpretation of a Pocong basically a ghost wrapped in a shroud. Pretty odd looking creatures, decided to make mine more dead looking than they often are.

Get ye down to London Bridge this evening for two films and a zine featuring this drawing for a mere £3!
Hopefully more in this vein to come next month!

Foxy Evolution

... or perhaps that should be devolution or de-evolution for tis in reverse order. It took me a while and a few foxes before I hit upon the right pose and style for the fox to accompany a fox themed story by Michael Reid in our forthcoming animal themed short story book. Thought you might like to see the process.

To see the finished drawing in context and with the story that influenced it's creation you will have to wait 'til April.

Coming some time in the first half of 2013 (nice an non committal there) a NEW book from Monster Emporium Press, featuring animal inspired short stories from Michael Reid & Mira Mattar and  illustrations in response from yours truly.  It is going to mega (tho not literally, physically it will be small but perfectly formed).

A preview for your glorious eye holes.

Sri Lanka Frogmouth // WIP

I drew this guy the other day. Just for the heck of it. Think I missed drawing birds. Will finish and scan properly later. He could do with a watercolour paint job I reckon.

Brave New World // House of Illustration & Folio Society Competition (3/4)

So this year the House of Illustration competition is to illustrate Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, a terrifying warning of a dystopic future of uniformity and control. The deadline approaches and I find myself in a much better state of completion than I normally do at this time of year, go me. Just one more illustration to go!

Wish me luck! One year I will get somewhere with this competition, oh yes i shall.
