New Internationalist Magazine // Detention Centre Map DPS // Issue Jan/Feb 2014

I was commissioned before Christmas to produce a map for double page spread that would be a satirical round up of the worlds detention centres, much like a website or guide book review giving them minus scores.

I took a antique map approach to this, the implication here being, migrants as explorers searching for a new/better world, with the sea monsters of the old maps replaced with metallic leviathans made of aspects of detention centres – these being the hazards they may encounter en-route.

This is a very interesting & terrifying issue and I highly recommend grabbing a copy of the magazine if you get the chance.

Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad // House of Illustration & Folio Society Competition 2014

Cover & spine design

1. 2.
3.

1. Black shapes crouched, lay, sat between the trees leaning against the trunks, clinging to the earth, half coming out, half effaced within the dim light, in all the attitudes of pain, abandonment, and despair.

2. I had to beat that shadow – this wandering and tormented thing. “You will be lost,” I said – “utterly lost.”

3. It was more than a year since his death , more than a year since the news came; she seemed as though she would remember and mourn forever.
