Happy Tampon & Pad for Bloody Good Period

I recently came across this awesome charity Bloody Good Period, founded by the lovely Gabby Edlin. The charity collects period supplies & toiletries for asylum seekers, refugees and those who can't afford them and seeing as this has also recently been in the news as an issue that is also effecting girls in low income families I wanted to offer my services to help her cause. No menstruating person should have to go through life without these basic supplies!

So please if you can spare some time or money to donate to the cause that would be amazing, you can purchase supplies from Amazon (more ethical retailers are available) and have them delivered straight to the charity or get in touch with Gabby on the website. Here is a happy tampon and pad to thank you for your generosity.

The Gift by Justine Crow // Transmitter Magazine – Christmas Edition 2014

So back in November 2014 (which seems like a very long time ago now!) I created these illustrations to accompany a short story by Justine Crow for Transmitter Magazine, a local magazine created just up the hill in Crystal Palace about all things Crystal Palacey. The story features mysterious presents, a monkey friend and a dark spirit. You can read it in the digital version of it in the magazine below (full screen the magazine and skip to page 58).

Twas a brilliant little project, turns out drawing monkeys is fun! Which is of course obvious and I have no idea why I hadn't realised it before. This dancing little fellow was a pleasure to create indeed.

Folio Society & House of Illustration Competition 2015 // The Folio Collection of Ghost Stories

So I started the year as I have for the past few years, head down and focussed on finishing my drawings for the Folio Society and House of Illustration Book Illustration Competition. Though this year I only heard about the competition a few days before Christmas so it was a seriously mad dash to the finish line.

Four drawings from conception to completion in two weeks. The last image was completed in 8 hours, setting a new personal best for speed of full page illustration creation! They are based on so a series of creepy old ghost stories, lots of spooky unseen beasts lurk in the depths, mwahahahaha. The three stories and a summary of the book can be read here.

I hope you like my drawings and keep those fingers crossed for me!

STIR Magazine // London School of Financial Arts

I was asked to illustrate an article for STIR Magazine envisaging what the new London School of Financial Arts hackspace might be like. The term hacker in this context being someone who looks at an existing system, dissects it and looks at it in a new way.

I wanted to created a cosy environment with all the information and technology a young, innovative financial hacker might need to hand.

You can find it in the Autumn issue of the magazine, out on October 8th and available for pre order here.

Ain't no party like an ice cream party!

How in the **** has it been nearly 4 months since i posted anything here. Where has the time gone? I mean obviously I've done a bunch of things in that time I just seem to have failed to document that. This is going to change.

So here is a little present to you to say sorry for my absence. Take this, make it your desktop and rejoice in the glorious melty joy of it all.

DISCLAIMER: THIS IS NOT AN ICE CREAM ORGY, THEY JUST LIKE EACH OTHER A LOT

Drunken Butterflies // Animation

Earlier this year the illustrious Garry Sykes released his first feature film. It's called Drunken Butterflies and is about a group of young girls in Newcastle and the trials and tribulations of everyday life. The imdb sums it up better than I:

Newcastle Upon Tyne, the Twenty-Teens. A romantic, violent, life-changing day in the life of eight teenagers.

It's a brilliant film funny, charming & rather upsetting. If you get a chance to see it I highly recommend it. My contribution to the film was a small piece of animation, a little 'trick' you might say. As a result of this I now have an imdb credit. Oh yeah, I am an animation department, dontchaknow!

TTIP & TTP // New Internationalist // May 2014 Issue

This months print issue of New Internationalist Magazine features another double page illustrated by yours truly, you can buy a copy here or read the article online.

I was completely unaware this trade agreement was happening until I was commissioned to produce this illustration, if you are interested you can find more info about TTIP here.

Or if - like me – you like things to be explained in comic form ... http://economixcomix.com/home/tpp/

Also what the Green Party have to say on the matter and why you should clearly be voting for them on Thursday!

"... it would blow apart the power of our democratic decision making. The deal provides corporations with new rights to sue the Government for legislating in the public interest – that’s definitely not acting for the common good. "

Synesthesia Magazine Illustration // The Radiator has a Tummy Ache

I produced this illustration for the February 2014 edition of Synesthesia Magazine the theme of which was Nonsense. It is based on a nonsense poem which you can read below...

The Radiator Has a Tummy Ache by Carlotta Eden

I once prescribed tablets
to the old microwave, and
consoled the lemon squeezer,
I hadn't used in a decade.

I remember hearing the kettle
having an asthma attack, and
running to save it by pulling
its plug out, and that

was that. I suggested the radio
stick to one station, tried to fix
the funny noise
the radiator was making.

Now the nurse lends me a smile,
makes me warm in my bed
I shut my eyes tight,
see me pulling a blanket

over the hole in the shed.

New Internationalist Magazine // Detention Centre Map DPS // Issue Jan/Feb 2014

I was commissioned before Christmas to produce a map for double page spread that would be a satirical round up of the worlds detention centres, much like a website or guide book review giving them minus scores.

I took a antique map approach to this, the implication here being, migrants as explorers searching for a new/better world, with the sea monsters of the old maps replaced with metallic leviathans made of aspects of detention centres – these being the hazards they may encounter en-route.

This is a very interesting & terrifying issue and I highly recommend grabbing a copy of the magazine if you get the chance.

Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad // House of Illustration & Folio Society Competition 2014

Cover & spine design

1. 2.
3.

1. Black shapes crouched, lay, sat between the trees leaning against the trunks, clinging to the earth, half coming out, half effaced within the dim light, in all the attitudes of pain, abandonment, and despair.

2. I had to beat that shadow – this wandering and tormented thing. “You will be lost,” I said – “utterly lost.”

3. It was more than a year since his death , more than a year since the news came; she seemed as though she would remember and mourn forever.

The Transmitter Magazine Illustrations // Just Desserts by Justine Crow // A Christmas Ghost Story

Just up the road from me is Crystal Palace, former site of the rather stunning building of the same name – which perhaps someday soon shall rise again. It is also home to the a massive radio transmitter from which the local magazine The Transmitter derives it's name - also the reason several of my friends refer to it as Crystal Paris, the transmitter is somewhat reminiscent of a certain tower, in a certain French city.

The Transmitter is a lovely little free local magazine exploring the many wonderous facets of South London and featuring reviews, short stories, comics and more. For their Winter Issue I was asked to illustrate a short story by local writer Justine Crow called Just Desserts, the black comedic tale of a food critic who pays the price for his sharp tongue. You can read the story with my illustrations in tow here (pg 26) or if you happen to be in Crystal Palace in the next few weeks they are available in many of the local independent shops for FREE but I recommend popping into Bookseller Crow as they will have lots in stock and it's a particularly nice place to hang out and peruse/buy books.

Pet Portrait // Lily & Pippa (the doglets)

This is a painting I did for my mum a few months back for her birthday. Lily & Pippa are miniature Daschunds, they are ace little dogs, I think I captured them rather well (hopefully my mum agrees!). This was a rather fun piece to work on, if anyone fancies a drawing/painting of their pet gissa shout.

London College of Fashion Show Illustration for Amelia's Magazine

This illustration is for an article in Amelia's Magazine about the 2013 graduates from the London College of Fashion. You can see the dress created by Sarah Buchanan that it is based on below.

It made me think back to the Book of the Dead exhibition at the British Museum that I saw a couple of years ago and of Ancient Eygptian Gods such as Rah the falcon headed sun God but also Stargate and sci-fi, so .... Ancient Egyptian Gods in space, pretty logical yeah? Obviously I wanted my central character to be female and this led me on a path of research towards the Goddess Bestet.

Cat Gods FTW!

Mars Attacks for Not For Rental Project

Here it is, incase you didn't get it the film was Mars Attacks the much maligned Tim Burton 90's classic. I personally think a movie that can have Jack Nicholson playing two characters simultaneously and somehow make me not hate Pierce Brosnan is doing pretty well. Akk!! AAKKKKKK!!!! AKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!

Branching out in evil // Aorta Burst Film Club zine

I was approached by Aorta Burst – who hold a monthly film night at Roxy Bar & Art – to contribute to their zine. This month the theme is Indonesian Horror and this guy is my interpretation of a Pocong basically a ghost wrapped in a shroud. Pretty odd looking creatures, decided to make mine more dead looking than they often are.

Get ye down to London Bridge this evening for two films and a zine featuring this drawing for a mere £3!
Hopefully more in this vein to come next month!

Foxy Evolution

... or perhaps that should be devolution or de-evolution for tis in reverse order. It took me a while and a few foxes before I hit upon the right pose and style for the fox to accompany a fox themed story by Michael Reid in our forthcoming animal themed short story book. Thought you might like to see the process.

To see the finished drawing in context and with the story that influenced it's creation you will have to wait 'til April.

To Dry For – Tea Towel Competition 2013

The lovely folks over at To Dry For are running their tea towel competition again. Here is my entry this year, hope you like it. It's like, a visual joke, innit.
